About Soroti City

Soroti City is located in Eastern Uganda, about 356 Km North East of Kampala. The City has two Divisions namely; East Division and West Division. Soroti Municipality was upgraded to a City through a resolution of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda with effect from July 2020 but it took effect from July 2021. 

It lies between latitude 33 0 .38’ East and longitude 1 0 .45’ North of equator. Most of the areas in Soroti City are underlain by rocks of the basement complex Precambrian age that include granites, mignalites, gneiss, schists and quartzites. There are two rocks; Opiyai Rock and Soroti Rocks. 

The Demographic Characteristics 

Soroti City night population is approximate 133,000 people while the day population is estimated to be 300,000. The day population is attributed to Soroti City being a trade hub of Teso, Karamoja, and Bugisu region. 

Natural Resources Endowments 

The city owns both public and private mailo land permissible for vast developments including productive use of open spaces given the growing population. There is a proportion of free hold land used for brick making, cattle keeping, cultivation of sugarcane and vegetables as well as an increasing number of washing bays. The natural resources available could provide a basis to promote local economic development and public-private partnerships. Soroti City hosts Opiyai rock and Quarrying of stone at Otatai stone quarry. The only Soroti Central Forest Reserve is under the management of the National Forestry Authority with several private forest plantations predominantly owned by schools. The city lies along the shores of Lake Kyoga, with numerous landing sites and islands. The clear focus on Awoja and Lalle sites are potential spots to spur water transport and recreational. 

Social-economic Infrastructure 

The City is endowed with several socio-economic infrastructures such as an airport, a connection to a railway line, tarmacked roads linking it to Kenya and Sudan and other social infrastructure such as hospitals, schools hospitality sites and home of Emorimor The King of Iteso.
